What can you use AI for?
Choose a task. GoalCube works out the risk under the EU AI Act with fixed rules and tells you what to do.
Low risk when the AI only pulls figures together and a member of staff assesses. ID and account numbers are hidden.
Listed in Annex III of the AI Act (except AI used only to detect fraud). A person decides, and you must carry out a FRIA.
Exempt from high-risk in Annex III, but blocking a customer should be open to review by a person.
A decision about a person's finances. The AI suggests; a member of staff decides.
The example is simplified. In GoalCube you answer a few questions, and the classification follows fixed rules.
What the law says
Credit scoring is high-risk
AI that assesses creditworthiness or sets a credit score for individuals is listed in Annex III of the AI Act. AI used only to detect fraud is exempt.
Annex III, point 5(b), AI Act
FRIA before use
Anyone using high-risk AI for credit scoring must carry out a fundamental rights impact assessment (FRIA).
Article 27 AI Act
Right to an explanation
A person turned down on the basis of high-risk AI can ask for an explanation of the AI's role in the decision.
Article 86 AI Act
Right to a person
Credit decisions must not be fully automated without the possibility of human intervention.
Article 22 GDPR; Consumer Credit Directive (EU) 2023/2225
Short and simplified. GoalCube helps you follow the rules; it is not legal advice.
Approve or decline? A credit officer decides.
The AI has assessed the applications against your credit policy without names or ID numbers. The credit officer decides each case, and the reasons are saved.

Questions and answers
Is credit scoring with AI allowed?
Yes, but it's high-risk under Annex III of the AI Act. From 2 December 2027 you must, among other things, ensure human oversight, use the system as instructed, keep logs and carry out a FRIA. Article 22 GDPR already applies.
What about fraud detection?
AI used only to detect financial fraud is exempt from high-risk under Annex III, point 5(b). GDPR still applies.
Can the customer get an explanation for a refusal?
Yes. Under Article 86 AI Act a person can ask for an explanation of the AI's role, and under GDPR the customer has the right to a human review.
